Residents of the southern Lebanese city of Nabatieh continue to look forward to returning and settling back into their homes, but concerns over the possibility of renewed Israeli airstrikes remain strong amid persistent border tensions and the continued presence of Israeli forces in positions near the city.
Nabatieh sustained extensive damage as a result of Israeli airstrikes that targeted multiple areas across the city, causing significant destruction to homes and public infrastructure and forcing many residents to flee during the period of heightened hostilities.
While some residents have begun returning despite the scale of the destruction, expressing their determination to remain in their hometown, others have chosen to postpone their return until security conditions improve and the situation on the ground becomes more stable.
Many residents argue that the continued Israeli military presence in elevated positions surrounding the city, including Beaufort Castle, leaves Nabatieh vulnerable to surveillance and potential targeting at any moment.
According to local residents, the city has lost much of its former character due to the devastation caused by the airstrikes. Once regarded as a major economic and social hub in southern Lebanon, Nabatieh now faces significant challenges in reconstruction efforts and in restoring normal daily life.
Some residents noted that many displaced families currently visit the city only during daylight hours before leaving again in the evening because of ongoing security fears.
For many residents, the decision to return permanently remains closely tied to the future of the ceasefire agreement. While there is hope that the truce will contribute to lasting stability, concerns persist that its collapse could trigger a new round of military escalation.
Although an agreement has been announced providing for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from areas in southern Lebanon, implementation of these measures continues to face delays, while Israeli troops remain deployed at positions overlooking several border regions.
