Reuters quoted a U.S. State Department official as saying that Israel has withdrawn from part of the “buffer zone” in southern Lebanon, in a move Washington described as a “goodwill gesture” toward the Lebanese government.

The U.S. official stressed the importance of the Lebanese army beginning deployment in the areas vacated by Israeli forces, in order to consolidate stability and prevent any potential security vacuum.

The development comes amid close monitoring of security arrangements in southern Lebanon, where the deployment of the Lebanese army in areas evacuated by Israeli forces is considered a key component of efforts to reduce tensions and reinforce border stability.

According to the official, the partial withdrawal represents an initial step toward the Lebanese government, to be followed by reciprocal field measures accompanied by on-the-ground security arrangements.

The move signals a gradual shift in the security landscape in southern Lebanon, as attention turns to the next steps and the ability of involved parties to stabilize the situation and prevent further escalation along the border.
